Since 2018, FABB has been asking local riders to Speak Up! to ensure the installation of the most appropriate biking and walking infrastructure and safety measures as part of the Braddock Road Multimodal Improvements Project.

Now, we understand that one of the most important elements of Phase II of the project—a shared use path on both sides Braddock Road and a shared used path for Ravensworth Road—are at risk.

The plans are still not finalized, but the shared use path options will allow people biking and walking to avoid unnecessary intersection crossings to access the path and increase safety. Additionally, these Braddock Road paths are critically important to the county’s expanding network of bike trails and lanes for improving connections that promote bicycling for commuting and non-recreation uses.

Despite the obvious safety and transportation benefits of the trail plan, public comments questioning or opposing the inclusion of the shared use path heavily outnumber comments in support.

Planning for Phase II of the Braddock Road Multimodal Project, one of the largest and most complex bike/ped projects in the county’s history, is still far from completion, so there is time for transportation planners to ensure the final design can address concerns of opponents and supporters of the paths. Changes have already been made to align the path such that fewer trees need to be removed.

FABB requests that riders who bike in and through this area send an email to VDOT engineer Mr. Calvin Britt at [email protected] indicating that you support having a shared use trail on both sides of Braddock Road and the extended shared use trail on Ravensworth Road in Phase II of the Braddock Road Multimodal Improvements project.

Don’t wait! Speak Up now for better bicycling along Braddock Road!
