A key bridge connection in the Springfield area is set for major rehabilitation — and local bicyclists and pedestrians have an opportunity to help shape the project before construction begins.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will host a virtual public information meeting on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m. to discuss plans for the rehabilitation of the King Arthur Road bridge over Accotink Creek.

For riders and walkers who use this corridor, this is an important chance to provide feedback on planned safety enhancements and advocate for strong multimodal access during and after construction.

What the Project Includes

The King Arthur Road bridge was originally built in 1964 and carries about 1,800 vehicles per day. The rehabilitation project is designed to improve safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians while extending the life of the structure.

Planned improvements include:

  • Replacing the entire bridge deck
  • Replacing supporting steel beams and bearings
  • Widening the bridge sidewalk
  • Replacing pier caps and column tops
  • Repairing exposed concrete on bridge supports

Most importantly for active transportation users, the project includes widening the sidewalk — a welcome improvement for people walking and biking across the bridge.

Why Riders Should Participate

Bridge projects can have long-lasting impacts on safety, comfort, and connectivity. FABB encourages local riders to participate in the meeting and share their experiences using the corridor, including:

  • Current safety concerns
  • Sidewalk and crossing conditions
  • Bicycle access needs
  • Construction detour considerations
  • Opportunities to improve connectivity to nearby neighborhoods and trails

The project will require a full bridge closure for vehicles and pedestrians for approximately 7–9 months beginning in 2028, making it especially important that VDOT hear community concerns early in the process.
