As FABB prepared to begin its celebration of its 20th anniversary in 2025 with our annual appeal, we took some time to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the challenges we’ve tackled over the years to share with our supporters. From advocating for safer streets to shaping Fairfax County’s transportation landscape, FABB has been a steadfast voice for bicyclists. Here’s a look back at some key moments that highlight how our work has benefited not only cyclists but the community as a whole.
The Fairfax County Bicycle Master Plan
For much of its first decade of existence, FABB worked diligently to press the county to develop and then adopt its first Bicycle Master Plan. Our work paid off in 2014, when the Board of Supervisors approved this landmark framework, which provided a comprehensive vision for creating a safer and more connected bicycle transportation network. Over the past 10 years, the Bicycle Master Plan has been instrumental in guiding the development of on- and off-road cycling facilities, shaping bike-friendly design in roadway and transit projects, and inspiring programs to accelerate implementation and promote a cycling-friendly culture.
Informing and Inspiring Cyclists
In February 2007, FABB’s first blog post set the tone for an ongoing commitment to keeping Fairfax County’s bicyclists informed and motivated. Over the years, the blog has become a vital tool for sharing breaking news, advocacy updates, and resources, amassing thousands of posts. Today, with a new website and social media outlets, FABB continues to serve as an essential hub for bicycling information and engagement.
Advocating for Better Infrastructure
One of FABB’s early successes came with the addition of bike lanes on Gallows Road in 2009. Although the initial plans weren’t perfect, persistent advocacy ensured improvements over the years, including bike lanes on the new Gallows Road Bridge over I-66. Work still continues on making Gallows Road more bike friendly and we’re not stopping.
Shaping Fairfax County’s Future
FABB’s influence on the Tysons Comprehensive Plan in 2010 demonstrated the power of collective advocacy. By encouraging bicyclists to participate in public meetings, we helped secure commitments to bike-friendly infrastructure in Tysons, envisioned as Fairfax County’s downtown. While challenges remain, including unfinished connections and ongoing construction, projects like grade-separated trails and bike-friendly developments reflect years of dedicated effort.
Securing Funding for Bike Projects
In 2014, FABB’s advocacy helped secure $40 million in funding for bike projects as part of Fairfax County’s six-year transportation package. This investment marked a significant step forward, leading to miles of new bike lanes and wayfinding signage. Yet, much work remains to expand this network and ensure that cycling is a safe and viable transportation option for all.
Standing Up for Fair Treatment
During the infamous Snowzilla blizzard of 2016, FABB brought attention to the inequities faced by cyclists and pedestrians. While roads were quickly cleared, trails and sidewalks remained obstructed, forcing many to navigate unsafe conditions. FABB’s advocacy led to increased awareness and some improvements, but snow clearing for non-motorized transportation remains an ongoing challenge.
The I-66 Parallel Trail
FABB was a driving force behind the inclusion of the shared-use path in the Transform 66 Project, which became the I-66 Parallel Trail that began opening in 2023. Starting in the early 2010s, FABB advocated for a safe, accessible parallel trail to accompany the I-66 highway extension. The result was the construction of 11 miles of new shared-use path that stretches from Gallows Road in Dunn Loring to Bull Run Park in Centreville, providing a critical east-west connection for cyclists and pedestrians. The project also includes bike lanes, shared-use path connections, and grade-separated crossings at key interchanges. FABB’s persistent advocacy ensured that this transformative trail became a reality, opening up new opportunities for safer and more convenient cycling in Fairfax County.
The Ripple Effect of Advocacy
Each of these examples underscores the broader impact of FABB’s work. Safer streets, more accessible bike infrastructure, and community-driven advocacy contribute to a healthier, greener, and more connected Fairfax County. These benefits extend beyond cyclists, improving quality of life for all residents.
