Our friends at the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) recently petitioned Amtrak to improve bicycle access on trains. Some of the specific requests were for increased bike storage on new Airo train cars, storage that eliminated the need to remove the front wheel, hooks that accommodate standard mountain bike tires, and a single payment policy for multi-train trips.

In response, Amtrak has committed to increasing bike storage on new Airo cars, which will be on routes like the Northeast Regional, serving the DC Metro area. These new cars will hold two bikes, and some will have baggage compartments for additional bikes. Riders won’t need to remove the front wheel, and the new racks will fit mountain bikes.

Unfortunately, the cost of bringing a bike on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and long-distance trains remains $20 per leg, requiring additional payment for train changes. However, some local lines charge less, thanks to state subsidies.

The power of advocacy is evident in these recent developments. Bicyclists speaking up for their needs can lead to meaningful changes in transportation policies. The Amtrak Bike Task Force, which the League leads as the coordinating body, is focusing on the provision of clear bike transport instructions, cooperation with state departments of transportation for bike cost subsidies, and making Amtrak stations more bike-friendly.

We encourage all riders in the Washington DC Metro area to get involved and communicate with transportation officials. Your voice is crucial in building a more bike-friendly transportation system.
