• FCDOT and VDOT have installed second temporary partial road closure to support active transportation during the pandemic.
  • This facility near Fairfax County Government Center bridges gap between existing sidewalks and gives local bikers and walkers more options for safe travel and recreation.

Fairfax County recently installed another partial road closure to allow nearby residents to travel and exercise safely along a short segment of one eastbound lane of Government Center Parkway. This temporary closure creates a connection to existing sidewalks on both ends along Government Center Parkway, bridging a gap where no sidewalk currently exists between Ridge Top Road and Waples Mill Road.

This connection also provides county residents an improved and safer option for outdoor recreation while maintaining social distancing practices during the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The duration of the closure will depend on the rate of continued reopening following the reductions of COVID-19 related restrictions.

Earlier this year the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) partnered to create a similar temporary closure of .5 mile of one northbound lane of Tysons Boulevard. The data collected as part of these projects will be used to support assessments of future transportation projects.

FABB was proud to have joined with other interested groups in requesting Fairfax County to examine and support solutions to provide more active transportation options during COVID-19. We encourage bikers and walkers in these areas to get out and make use of these new facilities to show our transportation officials how valuable and worthwhile these projects are.
