The new Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail Bridge over Lee Highway (Route 29) is a step closer to its planned completion in February 2021. When finished, the bridge will separate trail users from motorists at the intersection of Lee Highway and Fairfax Drive.

The landscaping around the bridge is nearing completion and this shelter and bike parking area was recently installed.

On weekdays, the W&OD Trail is a significant commuter route, carrying a steady flow of cyclists in both directions, tying together much of the region’s trail network. On weekends, the trail is a prime recreational resource for thousands of cyclists, runners, walkers, and more. VDOT reports that this section of the W&OD Trail serves approximately 1,500 trail users on weekdays and over 2,000 on weekends.

The bridge is part VDOT’s I-66 Inside the Beltway Project, and FABB is working hard to ensure that similar improvements to our bicycling infrastructure are included in all future VDOT projects.
