The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hunter Mill Road Over Colvin Run Bridge Replacement Project was completed in August and the new two-lane bridge is now open to traffic.

For local riders and walkers, the good news is that VDOT used the project to replace the previously one-lane bridge to add an improved crossing for the Gerry Connelly Cross County Trail south of the bridge. The improved crossing includes yield to pedestrian and bicyclist signs with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) to alert drivers to approaching riders and walkers.

VDOT also built abutments for a new trail bridge, which will be constructed by Fairfax County at a date to be determined.

FABB applauds VDOT for the improved crossing and installation of RRFBs. We believe that such markings, signage, and warnings should be the basic standard for trail crossing throughout the county.
