As FABB celebrates 20 years of advocacy, we reflect on a significant achievement for bicycling safety in Fairfax County: the W&OD Trail Bridge over Wiehle Avenue in Reston.
In March 2016, FABB called on local riders to support the planned bridge, addressing the long-standing danger of the at-grade crossing at Wiehle Avenue, a site of multiple bike crashes. This effort was rooted in the 2013 Reston Master Plan, which envisioned the W&OD Trail as a bicycle and pedestrian highway connecting to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station. Advocacy from FABB and other transportation groups helped initiate the bridge design process.
After years of planning, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the final design in July 2018, with construction starting in March 2023. The $12 million project included roadway, sidewalk, and median adjustments, and the new bridge now stands 18 feet above Wiehle Avenue, providing a safe, uninterrupted route for trail users and easing traffic for motorists.
The bridge officially opened on December 12, 2024, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony despite heavy rain. Fairfax County Board Chair Jeff McKay highlighted the importance of the project, noting the commitment of local bikers who use the trail year-round for commuting and recreation.
FABB is proud of our role in making this critical infrastructure a reality. But the work continues. Biking infrastructure takes years of advocacy and planning, and we need your help to identify and support future projects.
