Eleven years ago this week, FABB celebrated a major victory for area riders: the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved approximately $40 million in funding for bike projects as part of a comprehensive transportation package through 2020. This milestone marked a turning point for biking advocacy in the county, with an unprecedented $7 million per year dedicated to bike infrastructure. While this funding represented only a small slice of the nearly $1.3 billion total, it was a big step forward, and FABB played a critical role in securing it.

This progress wasn’t just about numbers—it was about making biking safer and more accessible for everyone. Many road projects funded during this period included bike-related improvements, thanks in part to our advocacy. Over the past decade, dozens of miles of bike lanes and sharrows have been added through the annual repaving and restriping program. Projects like the Fairfax County Parkway Bicycle Wayfinding Signage have enhanced the biking experience by helping cyclists navigate the growing network.
One of the most exciting milestones came with the completion of the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Trail. This 6,400-foot-long, 10-foot-wide shared-use path, along with a new pedestrian bridge over Dogue Creek, filled critical gaps in the East Coast Greenway Trail, the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, and the NoVA Loop Trail. The ribbon-cutting ceremony in May 2023 was a celebration of what can be achieved when we invest in multimodal transportation and prioritize connectivity.
But we’re not done yet. Fairfax County still has a long way to go to meet the needs of its bicyclists. The demand for safe, efficient bike infrastructure continues to grow, and we need your help to keep the momentum going.
