Beginning July 1, trail users traveling near Gravelly Point will encounter a new temporary bypass/detour as construction continues on the Long Bridge Project, the $2.3 billion Virginia Passenger Rail Authority initiative to build a new two-track rail bridge and a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian bridge across the Potomac River.

The good news is that the Mount Vernon Trail will remain open throughout construction. The temporary bypass shifts trail users closer to the George Washington Memorial Parkway before reconnecting with the existing trail north and south of the work zone. Riders and pedestrians should expect a narrower path separated from traffic by concrete barriers, along with occasional crossings by heavy construction equipment.

Representatives from the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority will be on the trail Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning to answer questions, provide information, and even hand out snacks as the new detour opens.

While no one welcomes a detour—especially one expected to remain in place for several years—we’re encouraged that the trail will stay open during construction of this important project. The new Long Bridge bicycle and pedestrian crossing will eventually provide a major improvement to regional trail connectivity between Virginia and Washington, D.C.

For those who prefer to avoid the construction zone entirely, our friends at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) have developed this handy detour route using Long Bridge Drive, Boundary Drive, and the new Pentagon Lagoon Trail.

If you’re riding through the area, slow down, watch for construction activity and other trail users, and give yourself a little extra time.

Ride safely!
