FABB has been advocating for improved bicycle infrastructure along Arlington Boulevard/Route 50 for many years. Since 2022, Fairfax County has been working on seven projects for bike/pedestrian improvements from Blake Lane to Prosperity Avenue and we were pleased when Dennis Marsh, a Project Manager with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation, recently provided us with a status report on these projects.

  • Blake Lane to Stonehurst Drive: A ten-foot-wide shared use path on the north side of Route 50 from the existing trail to the existing sidewalk west of Stonehurst is still under construction with a completion date of May 2024.
  • Stonehurst Drive-Route 50 intersection: A five-foot wide concrete sidewalk connection to existing bus stop with curb ramps and crosswalks improvements have been completed
  • Chichester Lane to Cedar Lane: Five-foot wide sidewalk completed.
  • Cedar Lane to Prosperity Avenue: A ten-foot-wide shared use path on the north side of Route 50 from Cedar Lane to existing trail is wrapping up construction and useable.
  • Barkley Drive: Pedestrian intersection improvements to be completed this month.
  • Route 50: A ten-foot-wide shared use path with a pedestrian bridge over Bear Branch was recently started and is scheduled for a September 2024 completion.
  • Lindenwood Lane to Nutley Street: Work on a pedestrian bridge over Hunter’s Branch is scheduled to start in June 2024 with completion in May 2025.

The ten-foot width is a bare minimum for shared-used paths and we continue to press the county to include wider paths in future projects.

We welcome local riders’ views on these Route 50 projects as they are completed to help shape our future advocacy. Just send your thoughts to [email protected].
