Celebrate the completion of the Grist Mill section of the Mt Vernon Memorial Highway Trail on Friday, May 12 at 10:00 am.

The ceremony will be held at George Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill, 5513 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Alexandria (if you don’t bike, you can park in the Gristmill parking lot). Following the Ribbon Cutting there will be refreshments and a commemorative walk/bike ride to Grist Mill Park and back.

The new trail includes a bridge over Dogue Creek and repaving of the existing trail extending to Mt. Vernon.

The completion of this segment will create a 60-mile trail loop that includes the following trails: Mt Vernon, Four Mill Run, W&OD, Fairfax Co Parkway, Rt 123, Lorton Rd, and Route 1. This is also part of three long distance routes: East Coast Greenway, US Bicycle Route 1, and Adventure Cycling’s Atlantic Coast route.

See the project website here.

Kudos to Fairfax County—especially Supervisor Storck—and all of the advocates who supported and helped to improve the plans for this great addition to the county’s bicycling and pedestrian infrastructure.
