Post updated on May 15 to reflect new information.

On Wednesday, May 17, at 11:00 am, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the first three completed miles of the I-66 Parallel Trail.

FABB has been a strong advocate for this trail over many years, and we’re excited that this first phase will soon be open. After the brief ceremony VDOT staff and FABB will lead a short ride east to Cedar Lane and back. Cyclists can then explore other sections of the trail open at that time.

Eventually, 11 miles of trail will be completed by the I-66 contractor and 7 miles by Fairfax County and others. The I-66 contractor portion will be completed in August of this year. Other sections will open over the next couple of years. FABB is advocating that those sections be completed as soon as possible.

See the draft trail status map we compiled after our project briefing from VDOT earlier this year.  You can also visit VDOT’s Transform 66 website where they have begun posting information about when sections of trail will open. If you use the new trail, please respect any trail closed signs.

The trail is not perfect and there were choices made about its placement that are less than optimal. FABB invites bicyclists in northern Virginia to join us in fighting to ensure that future highway and roadway projects include much needed bicycle and pedestrian facilities that are safe, accessible, and connected.
