The Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) is inviting riders and other outdoor enthusiasts to join an initiative to map amenities along the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail using a mobile application. This effort aims to enhance the trail’s accessibility and usability for everyone by cataloging key features such as wayfinding markers, interpretive signage, and various trail characteristics.
Interested participants can join a virtual volunteer training session scheduled for March 28, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, a perfect opportunity for those looking to contribute to their community and the great outdoors.
The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail offers a diverse experience for biking enthusiasts, catering to different skill levels and preferences across the Northern Virginia region. From scenic shared use paved paths between the Key Bridge in Arlington and the Mason Neck Peninsula and the Town of Occoquan to rugged mountain biking trails in the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area and Great Falls Park, there is something for every cyclist. The NVRC is keen on improving the trail’s infrastructure to enhance biking comfort and safety, ensuring an enjoyable experience for all.
Recent studies, such as the 2022 Corridor Analysis and the 2021 Health, Social Equity, and Economic Impact study, underscore the significant benefits that the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail brings to local communities, from public health improvements to economic development and social equity. However, these studies also highlight existing barriers to trail use, such as insufficient accommodations and wayfinding.
