VDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program recently updated its Bicycle Facility Inventory Map, providing an encouraging snapshot of Virginia’s growing bike infrastructure. As of this month, the map documents:
- 1,614 miles of shared-use paths
- 986 lane miles of bicycle lanes (including 150 miles of buffered lanes and 26 miles of separated or contraflow facilities)
- 484 lane miles of shared lane markings and local bike routes
- 7.5 miles of sidewalk connectors with standardized data
This tool helps planners, advocates, and riders better understand the network we have—and the one we’re still building.
But the map is only as accurate as the data behind it. That’s why VDOT is asking for help from the people who know these routes best: the riders who use them.
FABB encourages our members and fellow cyclists across Fairfax County to check out the map in your area and report any missing segments, updates, or corrections. Your input will help ensure the map reflects the true state of bike facilities and guide future investments.

Together, we can help make Virginia’s bike network stronger, more complete, and more rider-friendly.
