Ugh! Even as we celebrate Bike Month and the advances in bicycling in Fairfax County, we came across recent census data that presented a concerning trend: less than 25% of Americans aged 16 and older volunteered through an organization between 2020 and 2021, a significant drop from 30% in 2019.

This decline in volunteerism highlights an urgent need for renewed community engagement, particularly as we navigate the complexities of a post-pandemic world.

Since 2005, FABB has been committed to engaging and connecting the many communities across Fairfax County interested in or badly in need of safe and accessible bicycling. We think we can provide ample wonderful opportunities to reverse the decline in volunteerism for local citizens wanting to help create a sustainable future while promoting active lifestyles.

Why Volunteer with FABB? From its founding FABB has had a major impact on Fairfax County’s evolving commitments to making bicycling better. As a FABB volunteer, your efforts will directly contribute to creating safer, more connected communities. For younger volunteers, we think working with FABB can be very empowering as you gain valuable experience and skills in advocacy, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. Finally, FABB offers connection to a network of like-minded bicycling-loving individuals who are passionate about making a difference.

By volunteering with FABB, you can help make a difference by advocating with state and local government officials and others for the development of bike lanes, trails, and paths that ensure safe, inclusive, and accessible biking experiences for all community members.

You can join our efforts to promote safety by working with local police on improving education about the rights of vulnerable road users and on the enforcement of laws against reckless and distracted driving. Your involvement with FABB can help make our streets safer for everyone.

We all know bicycling is a fun, healthy way to commute and exercise. By volunteering with us, you contribute to fostering a culture of wellness and active living.

Being an advocate for cycling also contributes to changes in driving habits that help cut down on emissions that pollute the environment and contribute to global warming. As important, your example can inspire others to do the same.

Let’s pedal towards a brighter future together! Your time, energy, and skills can help transform our streets into safer, more sustainable, and welcoming spaces for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
