FABB encourages local riders and others who travel along Braddock Road to Speak Up! for safe and accessible bicycle infrastructure at a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) public meeting on Wednesday, July 26, on the Braddock Road Multimodal Improvements Project.
The project’s name highlights VDOT’s initial goals to enhance bicyclist and pedestrian safety, connectivity, and comfort in this area. FABB, along with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), is pressing VDOT to remain true to its vision and make safety its primary concern as plans for the project are finalized.
In particular, we need riders to Speak Up! and tell VDOT to:
- keep bicycle and pedestrian facilities on both the north and south side of Braddock Road;
- keep the extended shared use trail on Ravensworth Road in Phase II of the project; and
- maintain critical planned safety improvements such as bulb outs and medians at intersections, reduced crossing distances and times, and lower speed limits.
This public meeting is being held at the Lake Braddock Secondary School (use entrance #15), 9200 Burke Lake Road, in Burke. Attendees will have an opportunity to review project information starting at 6:30 pm followed by the VDOT presentation at 7:00 pm.
You also can review project information on the VDOT project webpage.
If unable to attend the meeting, you can still register your support by sending an email to VDOT before the August 7 deadline to [email protected]. Please reference “Braddock Road Multimodal Improvements” in the subject line. WABA has made sending an email even easier with a prepared email and link here.
We need to make sure that this multimodal project making use of multimodal funds puts the safety of pedestrians and riders first as it creates transportation infrastructure that actually encourages people to ride, walk, roll, and use public transit. This will reduce traffic congestion and pollution and make life better for everyone along this stretch of Braddock Road.
Please plan now to attend this important public meeting and help make bicycling better in Fairfax County.
