FABB wants everyone to know that Fairfax County Public Schools’ Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program encourages the establishment of bike trains (also called bike buses) to help children ride their bikes to school. This is a fantastic way for kids to travel to school while enjoying numerous benefits.

A bike train is a group of students and adults who cycle to school together, making stops along a designated route to pick up others as they approach the school. This innovative concept is perfect for children who live farther from school, allowing them to participate and enjoy regular physical activity.

Many benefits come from establishing a bike train. Riding in a bike train gives children the chance to work with a “team,” promoting cooperation and communication skills. It also provides an excellent opportunity for students and parents to connect outside of school hours, fostering community bonds.

FABB also encourages bike trains for safety and skill development. Children can practice their bicycle safety skills under adult supervision, ensuring they learn the rules of the road in a safe environment. In addition, with more eyes and ears on the street, personal safety is enhanced for all participants.

The wider community benefits from bike trains because each one reduces the number of cars arriving at school, leading to less traffic congestion during drop-off and pick-up times. Plus, fewer cars mean reduced emissions around schools, contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment.

Most important for our children, cycling in bike train provides an excellent outlet for regular physical activity, supporting physical, mental, and emotional health for children. Also, participating in a bike train is a fun and enjoyable way for kids to travel to and from school.

Organizing a bike train can be as formal or informal as you like. You can involve the school community in a program with several bike trains or simply gather your neighbors to ride together. Whether formal or informal, the key is to ensure everyone is having fun and staying safe!

Getting started is easy. First, choose a safe route with designated stops along the way. Next, invite neighbors and friends to join in and decide on a regular schedule for the bike train. Finally, make sure all participants know and follow bicycle safety rules.

By supporting and organizing a bike train, parents and local bicyclist volunteers can help children enjoy a healthier, safer, and more connected way to get to school. Let’s make cycling to school a fun and rewarding experience for everyone involved!
