FABB is thrilled to share that Adventure Cycling has added the Northern Virginia (NoVa) Loop to its Short Routes collection of free, accessible rides designed to expand opportunities for bicycle travel. Even better, the NoVa Loop was researched, mapped, and submitted by FABB’s own Bruce Wright — highlighting the incredible contributions of our members to growing the region’s biking culture!

A Scenic, Connected 68.5-Mile Ride

The NoVa Loop showcases some of Northern Virginia’s best trails, riverside paths, and bike-friendly roads in a 68.5-mile adventure connecting Fairfax County, Arlington, Alexandria, and D.C. Along the way, riders will enjoy:

  • Trail Highlights: Links the Mount Vernon Trail, W&OD Trail, and Four Mile Run Trail
  • Historic Sites: Ride past George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate, Woodlawn Estate, and Grist Mill
  • Urban & Natural Mix: Combines scenic greenways, parks, and vibrant local communities
  • Easy Access Points: Start anywhere along the loop — popular options include Rosslyn, Alexandria, and Vienna
Flexible for All Riders

The route can be tackled as:

  • A full-day ride or
  • An overnight trip with camping options at Lake Fairfax Park or Burke Lake Park

Food, water, and resupply points are plentiful along the W&OD corridor, making it beginner-friendly yet rewarding for seasoned riders.

Ride Considerately

Most of the loop follows paved, separated trails and bike lanes, but riders should note:

  • Some sections show mild wear and bumps from tree roots — wider tires (32mm+) are ideal.
  • Expect foot traffic, especially on weekends; use a bell and share the trail courteously.
Celebrate Our Local Trails

FABB encourages everyone to download the NoVa Loop route, get out and explore, and share the experience with friends and family. This exciting addition to Adventure Cycling’s Short Routes collection not only celebrates our region’s trail network but also reflects years of community advocacy and contributions from local riders like Bruce Wright.
