For years, Gallows Road has been one of Fairfax County’s more stressful corridors for people walking, biking, and catching the bus. But that may be about to change—and your voice can help make it happen.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has released its long-term vision for Gallows Road, and, to our pleasant surprise, it includes big wins for biking, walking, and transit. From nearly continuous cycle tracks to redesigned intersections and wider sidewalks, the plan reflects many of the improvements FABB and our partners have long championed.

But good ideas only become real when they have strong public support.

FCDOT is currently seeking feedback on its proposed improvements through an online Gallows Road Multimodal Study survey. The deadline to respond is September 30, 2025, and it only takes a few minutes to weigh in.

What’s in the Plan?

FCDOT’s Preferred Alternative would bring meaningful upgrades along the entire corridor from Tysons to Annandale. Highlights include:

  • Northern Segment (Route 7 to I-495): A cycle track on the west side and an 8–10 foot shared-use path on the east, plus street trees and wider sidewalks.
  • Middle Segment (I-495 to I-66): Business Access and Transit (BAT) lanes to boost bus reliability, paired with protected bike infrastructure and better pedestrian access.
  • Southern Segment (I-66 to Columbia Pike): A shared-use path along the west side and a three-lane roadway to make room for shade trees and wider buffers.

The result? A safer, more inviting corridor for people biking to work, walking kids to school, or connecting to the bus. Bicycle level of traffic stress is expected to decrease dramatically, making this corridor a true all-ages-and-abilities route.

What Does the Survey Ask?

The survey focuses on key decisions that still need community input:

  • Your reaction to the overall vision and specific segment improvements.
  • Preferences for where a bicycle bridge should cross I-495.
  • Views on corridor crossings and safety upgrades.
  • Comments on how the plan supports an “all ages and abilities” active transportation network.

You can also leave comments via voicemail by calling 703-890-5898 and entering Project Number 4491.

FABB has been advocating for a safer Gallows Road since 2019. We’ve pushed for protected bike lanes, safer crossings, and traffic-calming features to make this a corridor for everyone—not just cars.

FCDOT’s latest plan takes these concerns seriously. But now is the moment to show that our community stands behind this vision.
