• Join VDOT virtual public workshop on December 16.
  • Help shape plans to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety around future Amazon headquarters in Crystal City.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is holding a virtual public information meeting for the Route 1 Multimodal Improvements Study on Wednesday, December 16, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The study team will make a short presentation and then answer questions from the participants. Information for accessing and participating in the virtual meeting is available here.

In late 2018, with the announcement of an agreement to bring Amazon’s new corporate headquarters to Crystal City, Virginia agreed to improve safety, accessibility, and the pedestrian experience crossing Route 1, which is a major commuter route for Arlington County, the City of Alexandria, and southern suburbs of Fairfax County. The study’s goal is to identify enhanced multimodal connectivity and accommodations along and across Route 1 in Crystal City from approximately 12th Street to 23rd Street South with an emphasis on improving bicyclist and pedestrian safety. You can find information on the project from a recent Route 1 Task Force meeting here.

This virtual workshop is a great opportunity for local bicyclists to provide inputs to shape the early study concepts. These, in turn, will influence the draft feasibility study report and recommendations next spring that help VDOT determine the construction and cost parameters for the project.

FABB encourages Fairfax County riders who travel in this area to participate in the meeting. You can then give your comments during the meeting or use the comment form here. You also may send comments by email to [email protected] or by post to Mr. Dan Reinhard, P.E., Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030. All comments must be received by December 28, 2020.
