If you haven’t heard already, the close of the 2024 legislative session in Virginia doused the hope of final passage for the bicycle safety-focused bills that had seemed destined to become law. Despite successfully passing through the full House, unforeseen hurdles in the Senate, particularly within the Transportation Committee, killed the proposed measures allowing bicyclists to follow the WALK signal at crosswalks, to implement the Safety Stop, and to ride two-abreast.
Sadly, it was resistance from the Virginia State Police and the Department of Motor Vehicles that seemed to prevent passage of the proposed laws. They can’t seem to understand that in many other states these laws are successful and better for all road users.
Still, the efforts of multiple advocates, especially the Virginia Bicycling Federation, and the response of riders across the state was inspiring. FABB was proud to be part of this effort and joins tin committing to continue our work to make sure that reintroduced bike safety legislation will pass next time.
Rather than be disheartened, we encourage everyone to remain engaged with bicycle advocacy. Your voice is a powerful tool in shaping a safer future.
In unity, there is strength. We invite you to join FABB, and together, we can overcome obstacles and create a more inclusive, safe, and bicycle-friendly Virginia.
