FABB invites local riders to Speak Up! at the virtual public meeting held by the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) on April 22 at 7 pm, on the Dranesville District. This meeting will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) 2024 repaving program and speak up for more bicycle infrastructure in the district.

Only proposed crosswalk improvements at the intersection of Chesterbrook Road and Kirby Road are on the agenda for this year, but we would still like for riders to use the meeting to urge more planning to expand bike lanes in this part of Dranesville District as soon as possible.

The Chesterbrook-Kirby intersection initiative seeks to address safety concerns at a key crossing, making it safer for pedestrians to navigate. While this is a step in the right direction, FABB sees an urgent need for broader improvements. While we are committed to advocating for comprehensive cycling infrastructure that ensures the safety, sustainability, and connectivity of all non-motorized road users, it is still crucial for our biking community to support pedestrian-focused improvements.

We’re asking Dranesville District riders and residents to take this opportunity to engage directly with FCDOT officials, gain insights into the paving and restriping program, voice concerns, and advocate for a more inclusive approach to transportation planning that fully embraces the needs of cyclists. Protected bike lanes and other forms of dedicated cycling infrastructure are essential for promoting cycling as an eco-friendly and healthy mode of transportation. They play a vital role in improving cyclist safety and encouraging more people to consider biking as a viable and attractive transportation option.

Riders can join online here. Use meeting ID: 274 821 064 638 and passcode: 4YmbUn.

By phone, you can participate by dialing 571-429-5982 and using the Phone Conference ID: 265 318 470#.

If unable to participate, you can still Speak Up! for better bicycling because FCDOT will be accepting comments through close of business on Thursday, May 6, 2024, via email at [email protected]. Please note in the subject line the appropriate district repaving project.

Together, we can work towards a transportation system that equally prioritizes the safety and convenience of all users, paving the way for a more sustainable and connected community.
