April is Earth Month, a time to celebrate our planet and take action to protect it. Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22nd, is the largest civic event in the world, with over a billion people participating each year.

FABB encourages all Fairfax County residents to use this month to make a tangible difference in our community and for our planet by embracing one of the most eco-friendly modes of transportation available: bicycling. Our county, with its bike trails, parks, and growing number of dedicated cycling lanes, offers an unparalleled opportunity for both seasoned cyclists and beginners to explore the beauty of nature on two wheels.

Bicycling is not just a way to celebrate Earth Day; it’s a lifestyle change that benefits our health, our environment, and our community. By choosing to bike, even for short daily commutes or errands, we significantly reduce carbon emissions, minimize traffic congestion, and promote a cleaner, greener Fairfax County.

Fairfax County’s Biking Treasures

Fairfax County is home to some of Virginia’s most scenic and cyclist-friendly routes. The Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park (W&OD) offers a 45-mile trail that spans from Shirlington to Purcellville, winding through the heart of Fairfax County. This trail provides a safe, car-free pathway for cyclists of all ages and skill levels to enjoy.

Additionally, the Fairfax County Parkway Trail and the Cross County Trail offer extensive networks for more adventurous cyclists, connecting natural and cultural sites across the county. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ride or a challenging workout, Fairfax County’s trails have something for everyone.

A Greener Future

This Earth Month, join the growing movement of Fairfax County residents who are choosing to bike more frequently. Participate in community cycling events, advocate for more bike lanes and safer cycling conditions, and most importantly, pledge to use your bike whenever possible. By integrating bicycling into our daily routines, we contribute to a sustainable future for Fairfax County and beyond. Let’s use this Earth Day to commit to making environmentally conscious choices that will have a lasting impact on our planet.

Remember, every pedal stroke counts towards a healthier, more sustainable world. So, grab your helmet, tune up your bike, and let’s make Fairfax County a shining example of how communities can come together to support eco-friendly transportation.
