Fairfax County has launched an exciting new way for the community to support our growing network of trails and shared-use paths. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has introduced the Trail Ranger Program—a volunteer initiative focused on keeping our trails clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

FABB encourages riders, walkers, and all trail users to get involved.

What Is the Trail Ranger Program?

The Trail Ranger Program empowers volunteers to take an active role in maintaining and improving Fairfax County’s trail system. Trail Rangers help by:

  • Removing debris and trash
  • Reporting maintenance and safety issues
  • Encouraging safe and respectful trail use

This program is a great way to give back to the trails many of us rely on every day for commuting, recreation, and connection to our communities.

The first clean-up event took place on March 14 along the Fairfax County Parkway Trail at Loisdale Drive, kicking off what we hope will be a growing effort across the county.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunity

The next Trail Ranger event is just around the corner:

  • Date: April 11, 2026
  • Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Location: Fairfax County Parkway & Loisdale Drive

This is a great opportunity to meet fellow advocates, spend time outdoors, and make a visible difference on a well-used trail corridor.

More Ways to Get Involved

The Trail Ranger Program is also planning its first group bike ride on April 18, with more details to be shared soon.

Volunteer hours can be documented through the county’s volunteer system, making this a great option for students or anyone needing service hours.

Why It Matters

Fairfax County has thousands of miles of trails, sidewalks, and bikeways, and keeping them in good condition is essential for safety and accessibility.

Programs like Trail Ranger:

  • Improve the day-to-day experience for all users
  • Help identify and address maintenance needs more quickly
  • Build a stronger, more connected biking and walking community
