The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) are moving forward with the 2026 Roadway Restriping Program—a critical opportunity to make our streets safer and more accessible for all road users. Through this program, VDOT and FCDOT coordinate repaving schedules with cost-effective safety improvements, including bike lanes, crosswalks, and road diets.

Unfortunately, FABB missed the chance to promote two key public meetings last week covering proposed improvements in the Mount Vernon and Franconia Districts. But there’s still time to review the materials and make your voice heard!

Why It Matters

Fairfax County’s restriping program is one of the most cost-efficient ways to expand our active transportation network. But proposed improvements are only implemented if VDOT repaves the roadway and the public supports the plans. Without strong community input, opportunities to add bike lanes and safer crossings can be delayed or dropped entirely.

This is your chance to show that safer streets matter.

Mount Vernon District Meeting (September 23)

Proposed Improvements:

  • Beacon Hill Road (Richmond Hwy to Quander Rd)
  • Belle View Boulevard (Quander Rd to Boulevard View)
  • Lorton Road (Hooes Rd to Silverbrook Rd)
  • Quander Road (Richmond Hwy to Emmett Dr)
  • Southrun Road (Silverbrook Rd to Catia Ln)

View the meeting presentation here and submit your feedback via survey by Tuesday, October 7.

Franconia District Meeting (September 24)

Proposed Improvements:

  • Elder Avenue (Franconia Rd to Forestdale Elementary south entrance)
  • Southgate Drive (Richmond Hwy to South Kings Hwy)

View the meeting presentation here and submit your feedback via survey by Wednesday, October 8.

Upcoming Meetings

Virtual meetings for Hunter Mill, Providence, and Dranesville are scheduled for October 7, with Springfield District following on October 13. FABB will be sharing those details in future posts.

Let’s Not Miss Another Chance

Fairfax riders have made incredible progress over the years, but it only continues when we speak up. Take a few minutes this week to review the presentations and submit your comments—especially if you live or ride in Mount Vernon or Franconia.

Public input is essential for safer bike routes, walkable streets, and connected communities. Let’s keep the momentum going.
