We’ve been a bit quiet on the blog lately—apologies! The FABB blogger was indisposed for most of May and June, but we’re back and ready to bring you more updates as we continue celebrating FABB’s 20th anniversary and advancing better bicycling in Fairfax County.
We’re excited to share that the ActiveFairfax Transportation and Trails Plan has officially taken another step forward. On May 13th, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to initiate a Comprehensive Plan amendment to incorporate the recommendations of the ActiveFairfax Plan. In simple terms: the long-overdue overhaul of the County’s Bicycle Master Plan is moving ahead toward adoption.
This is big news for Fairfax County—and for FABB. We’ve been strong advocates throughout the planning process, encouraging local riders to participate in public meetings, review maps, and submit feedback. Your voices helped ensure this plan reflects the needs of our cycling community.
What’s in the Plan?
The ActiveFairfax Plan brings together and updates the Bicycle Master Plan and Countywide Trails Plan. It lays out a framework for a connected, comfortable, and convenient active transportation and recreational network. Active transportation includes walking, biking, rolling (wheelchairs, scooters, strollers), hiking, running, and even horseback riding.
This effort builds on years of community input—including open houses in Fall 2024 and earlier surveys and workshops—to develop a county-wide system that promotes equity, safety, health, and environmental stewardship.
FABB’s Role—and What Comes Next
FABB did its part in reviewing the draft Active Transportation and Trail Network Map with a special focus on connectivity. We’ve identified missing links, potential barriers, and suggested improvements for specific roadways.
In September 2024, FABB encouraged local cyclists to attend one of the 12 in-person open houses hosted by FCDOT across the county. These events offered a great opportunity to speak directly with staff, explore maps and displays, and share feedback. We also promoted the virtual meetings held in November for those unable to attend in person.
Now that the Board has initiated the plan amendment process, expect additional opportunities for public input this fall as the updated map, policies, and recommendations head toward final adoption. We’ll be sharing updates, meeting dates, and advocacy tips along the way.
Help Shape the Future
This moment shows what sustained advocacy can achieve. The ActiveFairfax Plan has the potential to transform how people move in our county—and ensure bicycling is a safe, accessible option for everyone.
