Fairfax County is considering important changes to Piney Branch Road that could make riding a bike in the Springfield District significantly safer and more appealing for people of all ages and abilities—and they need your input this week.
FABB urges everyone who bikes in the area, especially those who live near or regularly ride on Piney Branch Road, to complete the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) survey before it closes on Friday, May 9.
FCDOT is looking at a road diet on Piney Branch Road between West Ox Road and Route 29. Here’s what’s on the table:
- Repurposing two of the four current travel lanes to create buffered bike lanes
- Adding a center turn lane between Bideford Square and Caronia Way
- Maintaining all existing turn lanes and minimizing impact at signalized intersections
These changes would:
- Create new bike connections to the Fairfax County Parkway Trail and the future Route 29 shared-use path
- Clearly delineate space for bicyclists
- Reduce traffic stress for people biking, encouraging more riders across age and experience levels
- Calm traffic and improve safety for all road users
The survey asks how close you live to Piney Branch Road, how you use the road (car, bike, walk), and your level of comfort while biking or walking. It also asks whether you would ride more often if infrastructure were improved and what safety concerns you see along the corridor.
Riders who live nearby or use Piney Branch regularly are especially encouraged to participate—your input will carry the most weight and can help ensure these improvements move forward and reflect your needs.
