The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is holding a virtual public meeting on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, at 7 p.m., to provide feedback on a proposal to reconfigure Prosperity Avenue in the Providence District. The project aims to implement a “road diet” by repurposing two of the four vehicle lanes between Hilltop Road and Gallows Road into protected bike lanes. This initiative could be a game-changer for local cycling accessibility and safety!
The proposed changes are designed to make it easier for cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users to access the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station. Funded by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s (MWCOG) Transit Within Reach program, the project embodies the county’s commitment to fostering multimodal transportation options. Road diets like this one also bring additional benefits, including improved safety, traffic calming, and enhanced mobility for all road users.
The meeting will include a presentation from FCDOT staff about the proposed changes, an overview of road diets, and a chance for attendees to ask questions and share their input. You can attend the virtual meeting by:
- Joining the meeting on Microsoft Teams
- Joining the meeting on the web with Meeting ID: 225 412 553 431 and Passcode: co3f8cK3
- Dialing in to 571-429-5982 with Conference ID: 727 279 130#
If you’re unable to attend, don’t worry—FCDOT will post the presentation and a recording of the meeting online. Feedback will be accepted until Friday, Feb. 14, via a survey or a dedicated voice mail line available after the meeting.
This project marks a significant step toward bridging a critical gap in the bike network. Currently, Prosperity Avenue poses a substantial challenge for bike commuters, particularly between Hilltop Road and Gallows Road. While the proposed bike lanes won’t yet extend to Route 50, this initiative lays the foundation for future improvements. Plus, the inclusion of Capital Bikeshare stations in the project design demonstrates a thoughtful approach to enhancing connectivity for the community.
Let’s make sure our voices are heard! Attend the virtual meeting, share your thoughts, and advocate for safer, more accessible streets. With your support, projects like this can become a reality—helping Fairfax County move closer to a sustainable, bike-friendly future.
