The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is asking for community feedback on a proposed list of new pedestrian and bicycle projects across the county. These projects could shape the next round of investments in safer biking, rolling, and walking infrastructure.
FABB encourages local riders and walkers to take a few minutes to learn about the proposals and share your views. We especially need riders to attend one of the upcoming virtual meetings and complete the district survey by March 31.
Why This Matters
In fall 2021, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors set a goal of investing $100 million over six years in bicycle and pedestrian improvements to make walking and biking safer and more accessible—especially near schools, parks, busy activity centers, and transit stops.
Progress has been significant:
- Three funding rounds approved so far: $56.7 million
- Projects funded: 77 new FCDOT capital projects
- Funds already committed: $82.12 million
- Remaining funding expected: $17.88 million
The projects currently under consideration lean heavily toward pedestrian safety improvements, but many—such as upgraded curb ramps, safer crossings, and trail connections—will also make it easier and safer for people who bike.
Attend the Virtual Information Meetings
FCDOT staff will host two virtual meetings to explain the proposed project list and answer general questions about the prioritization process.

Examples of Proposed Projects
The proposed list includes projects in every magisterial district. A few examples include:
- Braddock District: Construct approximately 1,500 feet of active transportation facilities along the west side of Monument Drive from Monument Hill Way to Government Center Parkway.
- Dranesville & Hunter Mill Districts: Install approximately 4,000 feet of bike lanes on Coppermine Road from Centreville Road to Sunrise Valley Drive.
- Mason District: Extend the existing trail along Columbia Pike about 350 feet east to Sleepy Hollow Road and install a signalized crosswalk with new curb ramps and pedestrian lighting.
These projects were identified through community input, corridor studies, and site reviews, with a focus on areas that already see high levels of pedestrian and bicycle activity.
Take the Survey by March 31
FCDOT has created district-specific surveys where residents can review proposed projects and submit feedback.
Your input will help finalize the priority list and determine which projects receive funding. Please submit comments by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
FABB encourages everyone who cares about safer walking and biking in Fairfax County to participate. Even small projects—like safer crossings, curb ramps, and short trail connections—can make a big difference in building a more complete active transportation network.
Take a few minutes to review the projects in your district and share your feedback.
