Attention Fairfax cyclists, walkers, and outdoor enthusiasts! Big changes are on the horizon for Royal Lake Park in Braddock District. FABB encourage everyone to get involved now and help shape the future of our local trails.
The Fairfax County Park Authority is putting the finishing touches on its design and permitting process for a series of exciting trail improvements that will enhance accessibility, safety, and enjoyment at Royal Lake Park. These upgrades are part of a $1.3 million investment in our community, and your input can make a difference.
The planned improvements include:
- A New Pedestrian Bridge to replace the current bridge over Rabbit Branch on the north side of Royal Lake.
- A Stream Valley Trail Connection linking the existing asphalt path north of Lakeside Park to Commonwealth Boulevard.
- Enhanced Park Entrances by repaving the Richardson Court to Lakeside Park trail.
- Improved Dam Access by transforming the natural surface trail between Royal Lake Dam and Lakepointe Drive into a paved pathway for safer and more accessible travel.
- A Family-Friendly Shaded Picnic Area near the playground at Lakeside Park, perfect for relaxing after your ride or walk.
These projects will be funded through a mix of sources, including the 2020 Park Bond, proffered funds, and federal programs like the American Rescue Plan Act. Construction is slated to kick off in early 2025, with completion expected by fall 2026.
Why Your Voice Matters
To launch these projects, the Park Authority must finalize its environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The associated documentation is now open for public comment, and your feedback can influence how these upgrades take shape.
This is a great opportunity to ensure our trails reflect the needs and aspirations of the community. Whether you’re an avid cyclist, a casual stroller, or a parent enjoying the playground, your input matters!
