This fall, riders have a unique opportunity to explore Fairfax County and beyond by bike—with train assist! The 5th Annual Tour de VRE rolls out on Saturday, October 4, and offers cyclists a scenic tour along the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Manassas Line, all in support of the Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Foundation.
With 8-mile and 35-mile options, there’s something for every rider. Whether you’re looking for a fun local outing or a longer, more scenic challenge, you’ll enjoy visiting some of the very communities VRE connects, including Springfield, Burke, Clifton, Manassas Park, and Manassas.
But what really sets this event apart? Riders board a special VRE train shuttle to the starting point or from the finish line—giving everyone the chance to test out bringing their bikes aboard transit and explore new ways to travel throughout our region. It’s a perfect way to experience the intersection of cycling and rail—a core part of FABB’s vision for multi-modal, sustainable transportation.
Ride Options and Schedule
The 35-mile ride begins at Backlick Road Station in Springfield, following the Manassas Line to Broad Run Station in Prince William County. Riders will check in at Broad Run between 7:00–7:45 a.m., board the VRE shuttle at 8:00 a.m., and begin the ride at 9:00 a.m.
Prefer a shorter spin? The 8-mile ride starts at Manassas Park Station at 10:45 a.m., joining the final stretch to Broad Run.
After the ride, enjoy a post-ride celebration with food, music, beverages, and lawn games at Broad Run Station. Return transportation to Backlick Road Station departs at 1:30 p.m.
Why It Matters
The Tour de VRE is more than a bike ride. It’s a celebration of community, connectivity, and cause. Every dollar raised goes to the Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Foundation, supporting research and services for individuals and families affected by one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer.
As we continue to advocate for more connected, equitable, and active transportation in Fairfax County and across Northern Virginia, events like this showcase the power of combining biking with regional transit options—and the importance of riding for a purpose.
