Riders using the I-66 Trail near Random Hills Park should be aware of a temporary closure while long-planned trail improvements are underway.
Access from Random Hills Park to the I-66 Trail is currently closed as Fairfax County begins construction to upgrade the trail and address longstanding drainage issues. Signs posted at the site indicate the trail connection is expected to reopen in Summer 2026.
Trail Improvements Underway
The Fairfax County Park Authority is constructing approximately 1,000 linear feet of new asphalt trail in Random Hills Park as part of the Transform I-66 / I-66 Trail project.
The new segment will connect the VDOT I-66 Trail with the existing trail network within Random Hills Park and provide access to Random Hills Road. The trail will run through the park along the east side of Difficult Run, largely following the alignment of the current path in order to minimize impacts to natural resources.
During construction, the existing trail will carry construction traffic and will remain closed to the public for safety. The project is expected to take about six months, depending on weather conditions.
Please follow all posted signs and barricades around the work area.
Suggested Alternate Routes
While this section is closed, riders looking to connect to the I-66 Trail may want to use nearby access points via:
- Waples Mill Road
- Penderbrooke Drive via West Ox Road
For more information about the project, contact: Ken Trinh, Fairfax County Park Authority Project Manager at 703-324-1016 or [email protected]
FABB is pleased to see progress on these improvements, which will strengthen the I-66 Trail network and create a better connection through Random Hills Park once construction is complete.
