$100K Awarded for Westpark Drive Protected Bike Facility
Big news for bicyclists in Tysons and across Fairfax County: the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) has awarded $100,000 to support the design of a protected bicycle facility on Westpark Drive, bringing us one step closer to a safer and more connected Tysons (hat tip to Patch reporter, Michael O’Connell for bringing this story to our attention).
This funding, announced on May 21, is part of $760,000 in total grants awarded through TPB’s Transportation Land-Use Connections (TLC) Program and Regional Roadway Safety Program (RRSP) to promote walkable communities, enhance bike and pedestrian access, and reduce traffic fatalities across the DC region.
The new Westpark Drive project will build upon the Fairfax Countywide Bicycle Master Plan and aims to:
- Design a protected bicycle facility along a key stretch of Westpark Drive
- Improve pedestrian safety and comfort
- Establish a direct, safe connection to the Tysons Metrorail Station north entrance
- Support the future Leesburg Pike Trail, part of the National Capital Trails Network
As TPB noted in its announcement, the project reflects a growing commitment to safe, multimodal infrastructure that benefits people walking, biking, and accessing transit.
This grant is more than just a funding announcement—it’s a validation of years of advocacy by local riders, planners, and organizations like FABB. It reflects a growing recognition that bicycling is an essential transportation option in our rapidly growing and evolving Tysons urban center.
It also shows how public feedback matters. The county’s success in securing this funding is built on years of input from residents, including many of you who’ve spoken up at community meetings, shared your experiences riding in Tysons, and supported FABB’s advocacy for the Tysons Community Circuit and other bike-friendly improvements.
Let’s keep that momentum going:
- Celebrate this win by riding in Tysons and exploring existing bike routes
- Join FABB to support our ongoing efforts to improve the region’s trail and bikeway network
- Share your story—what infrastructure would make you ride more often?
- Show up at local meetings and speak up for safer streets for all
FABB applauds Fairfax County and the TPB for continuing to invest in connected, people-first infrastructure that prioritizes safety, accessibility, and long-term sustainability.
