Progress on the new 66 Parallel Trail in Fairfax County is continuing apace. Running along the I-66 corridor from Dunn Loring to Centreville, sections of the trail started opening the past May. As previously reported, sections between Vienna Metro Station and Cedar Lane, including the tunnel under Nutley Street, and between Blake Lane and Route 123 have opened.

Other trail sections will open in the coming weeks as final work and inspections are completed. These include the sections through the Nutley Street Interchange/across I-66, between Route 123 and Jermantown Road, and through the Route 123 Interchange.

Other sections nearing completion are those between Cedar Lane and Gallows Road, Jermantown Road and Route 50, Fairfax County Parkway and Stringfellow Road, Stringfellow Road and Route 28, and the Route 28 Interchange and along Braddock Road.

The trail is a major addition to the Fairfax County bicycle infrastructure network. Between Route 29 in Centreville and Gallows Road. Roughly three miles of trail is adjacent to the interstate, but, thanks to advocacy groups, this represents a great improvement over the original plan and much of the trail alongside I-66 is higher or lower than the adjacent roadway. Additionally, plans now provide access to the trail about every half mile.

You can find more details and maps about the trail at the VDOT I-66 Outside the Beltway Trails webpage. We also have posted trail maps and information, including VDOT’s March 2023 presentation to FABB on the trail, on the FABB website Resources page under Maps and VDOT Resources.

FABB’s advocacy greatly improved the final plans for the trail. Want to be a part of ensuring that future VDOT projects include the best possible bicycle infrastructure? Join FABB today!
