Fairfax County has committed to investing $100 million in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements by 2027. Thanks to the work of advocates, residents, and county leaders, $56.7 million has already been approved — with $44.4 million funding 77 new capital projects so far (You can find a list of approved and disapproved projects here).

But the work isn’t done — and now is the perfect time to make your voice heard (again)!

What’s Happening Now?

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is working with each Board of Supervisors district office to develop a prioritized list of future bicycle and pedestrian projects. These proposed projects will focus on:

  • High activity zones (places with lots of foot and bike traffic)
  • Opportunity areas for safety and access
  • Proximity to schools, parks, and transit stops

The full proposed project list will be released on the FCDOT Active Transportation webpage this fall. Community feedback will play a key role in shaping the final list, so we encourage you to take a few minutes to look at what has already been approved and be ready to look at the new proposals when the list is posted.

Got a Project Idea?

You don’t have to wait to speak up. If there’s a sidewalk gap, missing crosswalk, unsafe intersection, or bike facility you’d like to see improved, FCDOT is open to hearing from you now. You can request a project directly to FCDOT using their online form at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/transportation/contact/walk_fairfax.

If you request a bike or pedestrian Improvement, be sure to include:

  • The location of the issue
  • The type of improvement you’re suggesting (e.g., bike lane, crosswalk, curb ramp)
  • A brief description of current conditions and the desired outcome
Why It Matters

From safe crossings near schools to better trail connections and accessible sidewalks, these projects make our streets safer and more welcoming for everyone — whether walking, biking, or rolling. But identifying the right priorities depends on you. Local insights from residents who use these routes every day are critical to getting this right.

Let’s make sure this historic investment truly meets the needs of Fairfax communities.
