Fairfax County’s efforts to make streets safer and more efficient are coming to Oakton—and your voice is needed.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will host an in-person Community Workshop for the Oakton Congestion Mitigation and Safety Study on Thursday, November 13, at Oakton High School, 2900 Sutton Road, in Vienna, starting at  6:30 pm.

This is an important opportunity for residents, riders, and community members to share their ideas for making Oakton’s roadways safer, more efficient, and more accessible for everyone—especially those on two wheels.

To help with planning, please RSVP by emailing [email protected] or calling 703-877-5600 (TTY 711).

Why This Meeting Matters

This study was initiated following community concerns raised during the AT&T Oakton site plan amendment process. Now FCDOT is undertaking a comprehensive look at congestion and safety in Oakton, with an eye toward both immediate fixes and longer-term improvements.

As part of the study, the county will:

  • Analyze how new and modified roadway connections might affect congestion
  • Assess the impact of proposed changes on bike, pedestrian, and transit networks
  • Evaluate safety for all roadway users, not just drivers
  • Provide planning-level cost and implementation estimates
What This Means for Bicyclists

FABB strongly supports safer infrastructure for people who bike, walk, and use transit. The Oakton study offers a crucial opportunity to ensure active transportation is not overlooked in future plans. We want to see:

  • Protected or buffered bike lanes
  • Safer pedestrian crossings
  • Transit accessibility improvements
  • Streets that are comfortable, connected, and built for everyone

But change doesn’t happen without your voice. Attending this workshop is a powerful way to show that local riders care about making Oakton safer and more sustainable.
