Fairfax County is exploring a promising new step toward safer neighborhood streets—and your input is critical to getting it right.
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has launched a 20 mph Reduced Speed Limit Pilot Study to test the safety impacts of lowering speed limits on selected local roads from 25 to 20 mph. This initiative could help create safer streets for people biking, walking, and rolling—without requiring costly road construction.
But first, FCDOT needs your feedback to inform the evaluation process. If you live, bike, or travel in the Dranesville, Hunter Mill, Mason, or Providence districts, please take a moment to complete the survey for your district before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2025.
- Find your district’s survey here
- Or call 703-890-5898 and enter project code 7646 to leave a voice message.
Why This Matters for Bicyclists
Lowering vehicle speeds—even by 5 mph—can make a big difference in safety outcomes for vulnerable road users, including people on bikes. Slower speeds give drivers more time to react, reduce crash severity, and make neighborhoods more inviting for walking and biking.
This pilot is especially important because:
- It focuses on roads with schools, transit stops, and high pedestrian activity.
- It is part of a larger strategy to build safer communities across Fairfax County.
- It reflects recent authority granted by the Virginia General Assembly to allow counties to set lower speeds on residential and business district roads.
FCDOT will use your input—along with data on traffic speeds, volumes, and crash patterns—to assess the success of the pilot and plan future expansion.
Pilot Areas in Each District
The roads under consideration in the current pilot phase in Dranesville District are Douglass Dr (Georgetown Pike to Baron Rd), Baron Rd (Randolph Rd to Ingleside Ave), and Ingleside Ave (Baron Rd to Dolley Madison Blvd).
In Hunter Mill District, the roads are Glade Dr (Sunrise Valley Dr to Reston Pkwy) and Pinecrest Rd (Glade Dr to South Lakes Dr).
The Mason District roads are Patrick Henry Dr (Leesburg Pike to Beachway Dr), Beachway Dr (Patrick Henry Dr to Nevius St), Nevius St (Leesburg Pike to Beachway Dr), and Peace Valley Ln (west of Justice High School).
Finally, in the Providence District, the roads are Flagpole Ln (White Granite Dr to Borge St), Borge St (Jermantown Rd to Cimmaron Oaks Ct), and Bushman Dr (Borge St to Blake Ln).
Help FABB Advocate for Safer Streets
FABB supports this pilot effort to promote lower speeds, safer neighborhoods, and better biking conditions. We’re calling on all riders to:
- Take the survey
- Share it with neighbors
- Stay engaged as the pilot progresses into 2026 and beyond
