Fairfax County continues to move forward with smart, community-focused investments in active transportation—this time with a set of important improvements along Route 50 in the Providence District.
In November 2025, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) announced the completion of a series of pedestrian and bicycle safety upgrades along a 1.5-mile stretch of Route 50 from Blake Lane to Prosperity Avenue. The multi-year effort focused on building a safer, more accessible corridor for those walking, biking, rolling, and using transit.
Upgrades include:
- New sidewalks and shared-use paths
- Safer street crossings and ADA-compliant curb ramps
- Improved stream crossings and connections to public transit
- Bus stop pads that link directly with bike/ped infrastructure

These improvements enhance access to neighborhoods, retail, and parks, while also strengthening connections to the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail—a vital north-south spine for Fairfax County’s trail network.
Providence District Supervisor Dalia Palchik summed it up well:
“It’s not just about facilitating vehicle traffic but making sure we’re being intentional and safe about including pedestrians and bicyclists and those who use other modes of transportation.”
We couldn’t agree more.
Let’s Keep Fairfax Rolling
FABB applauds the County and FCDOT for completing the Route 50 improvements and staying committed to a safer, more bike-friendly Fairfax. Let’s keep that momentum going—and make sure our communities don’t lose ground when it comes to building a truly multimodal future.
