The Active Fairfax Transportation Plan (AFTP), which combines the Bicycle Master Plan and Countywide Trails Plan into a unified vision for a safer, more connected county, is entering a critical phase. The finalized plan will go before the Fairfax County Planning Commission on March 11 and the Board of Supervisors on May 5, with the official staff summary expected February 18.
FABB strongly supports this plan, which promotes safer streets, expanded access, and more equitable and sustainable transportation choices for people of all ages and abilities. Developed over several years with significant public input, the AFTP outlines a comprehensive, multimodal network of trails, bikeways, sidewalks, and amenities like safe crossings, bike parking, and wayfinding. It aims to transform how Fairfax County residents walk, bike, and roll for recreation and daily travel.
But approval is not guaranteed. Opponents of the plan may voice objections at these upcoming hearings. That’s why it’s vital for bicyclists and other supporters to show up—virtually or in person—and speak out in support.
