There’s still time to sign up for Wednesday’s I-66 Vienna Metro Station Bike / Ped Improvements meeting.

FABB is especially excited about the planned shared-use path and safety additions to accommodate bicyclists at Oakton High School and those to connect trail users with the cross-county trail. In addition, a portion of the planned path serves as an off-corridor section of the I-66 Trail, which, when finished, will be critical bike commuting infrastructure and an important part of the larger regional network of paths and bike lanes.

We want to have strong rider participation to show support for all of the planned improvements and to show appreciation to VDOT and FCDOT for their work in developing the improvements plan and repurposing roadways to provide space for bicyclists and pedestrians. The planned road diet, in particular, not only calms traffic but provides space for the two-way cycletrack and a sidewalk without additional widening. The almost certain success of these improvements will encourage their replication throughout the county in future road projects.

In short, if we want to see more of these types of safety and accessibility improvements, riders and walkers need to let transportation planners and other county and state officials know that we care and approve of these efforts.

Don’t wait! Sign up now at the VDOT project website https://www.virginiadot.org/ViennaMetroBikePed.

If unable to participate, please provide your support the project by December 3 on the comment page of the VDOT project website above. You can also email comments to [email protected]. Please reference “Vienna Metro Station Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements” in the subject line. Finally, you can send a letter to Mr. Zamir Mirza, Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030.
