The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT), which held a recent meeting about “branding” for the Richmond Highway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, is inviting public comment through a survey that provides an opportunity for local riders to support bike infrastructure and safety measures. The Richmond Highway BRT system will travel between Huntington Metrorail Station and Fort Belvoir. It complements the Richmond Highway widening project, which will add two travel lanes, separate bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the road, and reserve the median width to accommodate dedicated bus-only lanes. Other improvements will include making all pedestrian and bicycle facilities ADA-compliant. The project is scheduled to begin construction in 2023
The survey seeks community feedback about branding options that will help consumers identify and experience the future service. By taking the branding survey you support bicycling by responding to the first question—“how you would like to see the character or personality of Richmond Highway evolve”—by selecting the options of “bike lanes” and “safe/ped friendly.” The “Richmond Highway Corridor” mentioned in the survey refers to the area/neighborhoods adjacent to and near the planned BRT route.
