- VDOT and FCDOT recently announced four additional repaving projects that will add new bike lanes to areas in Hunter Mill, Dranesville, and Providence Districts.

FABB encourages local riders to participate in a virtual meeting hosted by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) on Thursday, June 6, at 6:30 pm, on four additional repaving projects. This is a great opportunity to show your support for and share your ideas on plans to add regular and buffered bike lanes in the following areas:
Hunter Mill District
- Coppermine Road from Centreville Road to Frying Pan Road: VDOT and FCDOT are proposing to convert the underutilized outside travel lanes to buffered bike lanes.
- McNair Farms Drive from Centreville Road (near the Cocktower) to Centreville Road (south of Coppermine Road): VDOT and FCDOT are proposing to add bike lanes. Existing legal on-street parking will remain on both sides of the road.
- Thomas Jefferson Drive from McNair Farms Drive to Frying Pan Road: VDOT and FCDOT are proposing to add bike lanes. Existing legal on-street parking will remain on both sides of the road.
Dranesville and Providence Districts
- Chain Bridge Road from Colonial Lane to Great Falls Street: VDOT and FCDOT are proposing to add bike lanes where space allows as the street passes under the Toll Road.

VDOT and FCDOT use the repaving and restriping process as an affordable means to implement Fairfax County’s Comprehensive Plan to improve traffic safety and provide more transportation options by adding bicycle infrastructure. Although this results in the piecemeal addition of new bike lanes and sometimes provides inadequate and unprotected bike lanes, FABB supports the process as a means of building momentum for the eventual build out of complete bike lane networks. These meetings are an excellent opening to Speak Up for better infrastructure and to educate transportation planners about riders’ lived experience with sharrows, unprotected lanes, and door-zone bike lanes.
