FABB encourages Sully District riders to attend the paving and restriping meeting hosted by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT). The meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 2, at 7:00 pm, at the Sully Governmental Center, 4900 Stonecroft Boulevard, in Chantilly. This will be a great opportunity for local bicyclists and other residents to speak directly with road engineers and transportation planners about the paving program, proposed striping changes to add bike facilities, and general traffic safety concerns.
The planned restriping in Sully will bring some much needed bike facilities. VDOT and FCDOT are proposing to add bike lanes, as well as shared lane markings in the narrow road sections on Old Centreville Road between Upperridge Drive and Cul-de-sac. As part of this proposal, existing legal on-street parking on the east side of Old Centreville Road would be converted to a bike lane, but on-street parking will be maintained on the west side of the road. On Singletons Way between New Braddock Road and Old Centreville Road and on Green Trails Boulevard between Rock Canyon Drive and Wood Rock Way, legal on-street parking will be maintained on both sides as the existing wide travel lanes easily accommodate new bike lanes.
VDOT and FCDOT also are proposing to add bike lanes on Upperridge Drive between Centreville Road and Centrewood Drive, again maintaining existing legal on-street parking on both sides of the road. Finally, bike lanes and sharrows are to be added to Lafayette Centre Drive with legal on-street parking being maintained on all along the outside travel lane. As part of this proposal, where on-street parking is highly utilized on both sides of the road, sharrows will be used to allow on-street parking on both sides of the street.
