Bicyclists in the west and east of the county have a great opportunity to speak up in support of bicycle lanes and sharrows next week.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will hold a public meeting on proposed Sully District paving and restriping changes on Tuesday, March 26, at 6:30 pm at the Sully Government Center, 4900 Stonecroft Boulevard, in Chantilly.The presentation will provide interested residents with information about the benefits of redesigning roads to create complete streets that improve safety for everyone.
In Sully District, FCDOT and VDOT are proposing to convert underutilized outside lanes in each direction on New Braddock Road between Store House Drive and Centerwood Road to on-street parking and bike lanes. Proposals also include adding bike lanes on St. Germain Drive between Machen Road and Golden Oak Road without affecting on-street parking. Provide online feedback on Sully District restriping here.
On Thursday, March 28, at 6:30 pm at the South County Government Center, 8350 Richmond Highway in Alexandria, VDOT and FCDOT will hold a community meeting on proposed Mount Vernon District paving and restriping changes. Local residents will have the opportunity to learn about VDOT’s repaving program, proposed striping changes and give feedback.
FCDOT and VDOT are proposing to add bike lanes in both directions on Boston Boulevard while maintaining existing on-street parking. Bike lanes and sharrows also are being recommended for Fullerton Road between Rolling Road and Boston Boulevard and Northumberland Road. In addition, the two highway departments are proposing to convert the outside lanes of Lorton Station Boulevard into either on-street parking lanes with bike lanes or into buffered bike lanes, depending on community feedback. Paving work in the county is planned to begin in April and last through November. Exact work dates are available about ten days prior to work beginning as contractors set schedules. In subdivisions, “no parking” signs with precise date information will be posted at least three business days before work starts.
