You may recall that back in May FABB encouraged Alexandria-area riders to participate in a series of Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) public information meetings on the I-495 Southside Express Lanes study and to demand inclusion of a shared-use path in the project.
The study examines the possibility of adding express lanes on I-495 between Franconia and Maryland Route 210. Such a trail would match the I-66 Outside the Beltway trail currently under construction and the trail to accompany the I-495 North Express Lanes project.
We are happy to report that 62 bicycling and pedestrian advocates provided VDOT with their comments about what needed to be included in the proposal. In a summary report, VDOT responded that it would evaluate local planning documents and develop alternatives in a manner consistent with local comprehensive plans. The completed alternatives will be presented at the next series of VDOT public information meetings set for later this fall or in early 2023.
