Fairfax City is preparing an application for Smart Scale funding to complete a trail connection across Route 50 between the George Snyder Trail (currently in design) and the Willcoxon Trail, which connects further east with the Cross-County Trail. Now is the time to offer your thoughts on the design. The conceptual design envisions an 850-foot long, 10-foot-wide, shared-use path running along Fairfax Boulevard. The George Snyder Trail Extension project was included in the fiscal year 2022-23 Two-Year Transportation Program adopted by Fairfax City Council on June 22, 2021.
From start to finish, the process is very lengthy. So, the city needs your help to get the design right. If endorsed by the Fairfax City Council in June, the Smart Scale funding application will be submitted to the Virginia Department of Transportation in August. If awarded, the funding will only become available in fiscal year 2026 with construction beginning approximately two years later.
