Happy riders crossing over I-495 between Pimmit Hills and Tysons.

Last Saturday, November 5, 17 riders joined FABB’s tour of Tysons to see recent developments that are making the area better for bicycling. The highlight of the tour was the Old Meadow bike and pedestrian trail and bridge, which connects Pimmit Hills neighborhoods on the eastern side of I-495 to Tysons Corner Center to the west.

FABB has been involved in the planning of Tysons for more than a decade. FABB produced an early bike plan for Tysons that was used as a starting point by a contractor to produce the Tysons Bicycle Master Plan in 2011. Bruce Wright of FABB also served on the task force that help developed the county’s plan for Tysons’ redevelopment in preparation for the coming of Metrorail.

During the tour riders saw how these plans have translated into final on-the-ground improvements to walkers and bikers. The tour included a visit to the Scotts Run Trail and riders traveled through two new walkable and bike-able, mixed-use developments near the two Metro stations close to Capital One Center and The Boro.

Old Meadow Trail and Bridge

The newest project traversed by the riders was the Old Meadow trail and bridge, which opened on October 21. Led by VDOT, the project includes a trail from Old Meadow Lane in Pimmit Hills that connects to the new bridge, and a trail connection on the other side to the area around the Tysons Corner Center (Tysons I). Both the trail and bridge include lighting. VDOT and Fairfax County DOT will hold the official ribbon-cutting for the new bridge on the week on November 9.

FABB is proud of the role our advocates played in making bicycling better in Tysons.
