Tomorrow is the first day of Bike Month, when we celebrate biking and its many benefits as well as recommit ourselves and encourage others to incorporating bicycling into our lives.

Did you know that replacing one car trip per day with a bike trip reduces your carbon emissions from transportation by 67 percent? Over the course of a month or a year, this one small change in your life will have a major impact on the future and health of America and planet Earth.

A good day to get started is Sunday, May 2, 2021, when the weather in Fairfax County is supposed to be mostly sunny and, with exception of some gusty winds, just about perfect for getting out and celebrating the joy of biking. FABB encourages everyone to join us on Sunday for the League of American Bicyclists’ inaugural National Ride a Bike Day.

Covid-19 continues to limit official bike month events, but FABB and the League want to get as many riders, old and new, out on the streets and trails to show how life is better for everyone when more people ride bikes. A ride of any distance can serves as advocacy to show local transportation officials the importance of making bicycling a key element of our travel infrastructure and, when many riders join in, the combination of rides becomes a powerful piece of collection action.

FABB also challenges local riders to spend this first Sunday of Bike Month helping others rediscover that simple joy of riding a bike! Invite a friend, a family member, a neighbor, a co-worker, or anyone else to join you for a ride. If they don’t have a bike, let them use yours or help them try out a Capital Bikeshare bike at one of the 35 stations around the county in Reston, Tysons, West Falls Church, and Merrifield. (FYI: FCDOT has been awarded Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funding for the expansion of the Capital Bikeshare network in Reston. The funding will be used to purchase new equipment and bicycles for 21 new stations.)

We hope you’ll join us this Sunday for National Ride A Bike Day and then keep the celebration of biking going throughout Bike Month in May.
