It’s Mason District riders’ turn to speak up for bike infrastructure at the upcoming Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) public meeting on proposed paving and restriping changes. The meeting is set for Tuesday, March 3, at 6:30 pm at the Mason Governmental Center, 6507 Columbia Pike in Annandale. Community members will have the opportunity to learn about VDOT’s repaving program, proposed striping changes and give feedback.
The restriping program is a minimal cost way to implement the Fairfax County Bike Master Plan. In Mason District VDOT and FCDOT have been able to plan for new bike lanes and sharrows without affecting on-street parking, which should help reduce opposition to the needed bike facilities. The transportation departments are proposing to narrow the wide travel lanes Carlin Springs Road between Leesburg Pike and Seminary Road by adding bike lanes Bike lanes or sharrows will be added where feasible and depending on road width. Bike lanes also will be added to Scoville Street between Seminary Road and Paul Street, Lacy Boulevard between Columbia Pike and Magnolia Lane, Lafayette Village Drive between Trammel Road and Hirst Drive, Maple Place between Columbia Pike and Annandale Road, and Markham Street between Annandale Road and Little River Turnpike. South George Mason Drive between Seminary Road and Leesburg Pike will be getting buffered bike lanes that will connect to sharrows between Leesburg Pike and Hamilton Drive.
